"I want to see the world directly with my own eyes. Not rely on someone else's eyes. I want to know well how I feel. That would be essential for me to be able to imagine how others feel. Since I have spent the majority of my time at and around 40 degrees north latitude, the sensations that have seeped into my body are naturally influenced by the nature in the land...

Kollwitz was a nurse during WWI; and became known for her intense renderings of death and grief in her German Expressionist style. I am drawn to this etching that centers care, joy, and love equally as much as I am drawn to the ‘Death’ series. The mother’s hands and arms melt around the small child so protectively. Their faces share the same ominous shadow we cannot see (death), but the mother is smiling and choosing to foster and protect life and love, anyway.

Online Only

Mr. Davidson will be closing the physical gallery space at 85 Way in Pioneer Square as of August 9th. The online store will remain open. You can still purchase artworks for local pickup until September 1st or with nationwide and international shipping after.

Juan Genovés | Echoes of the People

Rejecting what he considered elitism within abstraction, Genovés borrowed techniques from Pop art, perspectives from newspapers, and surveillance imagery to show crowds, spotlights, and shadows of people in distress. Often devoid of clear landmarks or locational details, his work demonstrates the universality of terror and its effects on people internationally. Genovés’ work has been exhibited and received awards internationally and is held in many major collections, including Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York,  Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the  Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna. Genovés died in Madrid in 2020.

Drewes' use of line and form reminds me of my favorite mid-century modern sculptors and architects. It's a house or a sculpture and beauty on a page... No matter what it is, it is carefully composed. Outstretched wings give flight while the central structure feels solid and grounded.

'...A longtime favorite of mine, I have been thinking about Rouault’s 'Street of the Lonely’ much more often lately. In the Miserere series, Rouault meditates on the world between wars, on suffering, destruction, humanity, and spirituality; and on the poor, marginalized people with whom he saw himself. This depiction of a dark, cold, bare street speaks about homes without people, people without homes, and the communities that suffer when its members are removed by heartless villains...'

‘#7, Triángulo (Triangle)’ from Genovés’s ‘Silencio, Silencio’ series triangulates the feeling of militant repression closing in on civilians. Spray paint textures in grayscale evoke a machined, pop-art aesthetic that sits uncomfortably in my gut. While I would not want this art work to be in my bedroom, I would place it with reverence next to the front door as a reminder of what complacent politics yields.

'Plaza Grande' delivers the warmth that I'm seeking and missing from Latin America. The piece has a natural richness, an earthly heat like terracotta, clay, or red soil, almost soaked into the different reds of the paper and emanating from within. Although I can't make out specific people or buildings in this plaza, I feel the density of the hub, the community and structures mixing together and transferring energy.

'I have been craving playful lightheartedness lately, and Ando’s etchings provide just that with a nod to Lewis Carol’s ‘Through the Looking Glass’. In this piece, the white rabbit seems to be slowly falling out of the tree and into springtime. Wintertime has passed and new adventures await.'

Mio Asahi | Stories in the Wind

Davidson Galleries is pleased to present Stories in the Wind, opening Thursday March 6th. This exhibition features new etchings from contemporary Japanese artist, Mio Asahi. For me, 'El Camino de la Vaca' (The Cow's Path/Trail) is a 'why not'? type of piece. It has a simple joy for joy's sake. Of course, there is intention and artistry, like the beautiful ink textures, patterns, and perspective. But at this moment I appreciate his choice to create an uncomplicated, sweet scene. The grass forms a sort of red carpet for the underappreciated cow. We can smile just because.

Mikio Watanabe's work is extremely delicate and intriguing. The themes are simple, but his execution of form and technique are quite complex. Fossile catches my eye and reminds me of an Italian marble sculpture. The lighting is beautifully balanced between cool and warm tones and the figure's pose is expressive. Both filled with emotion and purpose.
Robert Connell & Phil Greenwood | Through the Branches

Davidson Galleries is pleased to share work from Contemporary artists, Robert Connell and Phil Greenwood, including newly added ink and gouache paintings from Connell.

Though they observe the world from separate continents, their resulting works are united by an appreciation of contrast, texture, and above all, nature. The artists don’t simply look at the environment, they look through it. They capture scenes through webs of tree branches, groups of tree trunks, through heavy mists and golden evening sun. Connell and Greenwood go into the natural world to collect photographs, sketches, and even the first brushstrokes of the work so their pieces come straight from the grasses, riverbanks, and forests that they depict.

The 'Alchemy of Love' series captivates me, and this piece in particular can lock me in an endless loop. There's a little contradiction – using text and words to tell us 'There are no words here'. My mind can go over that detail again and again. In the end, I love it because this simple contradiction reveals how hard it is to express ourselves or our experiences. We have only words to describe the indescribable. Landsaat also offers twisted vines, knotted branches, and eccentric demons to help us visualize our predicament, but the rest is left to us.
