Juan Genovés (Spanish, 1930-2020) was born in Valencia, Spain in 1930. His childhood was defined by the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s fascist dictatorship, witnessing firsthand the crowds of people running for shelter. Genovés studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Art in Valencia. He settled in Madrid in the 1960s and was connected to many active artist groups including Los Siete, Parpalló, and Hondo, all working in post-war Spain. Throughout his career, Genovés was involved in the opposition movements against the Franco regime, efforts toward the recovery of Spanish democracy, and the fight for social justice.

Rejecting what he considered elitism within abstraction, Genovés borrowed techniques from Pop art, perspectives from newspapers, and surveillance imagery to show crowds, spotlights, and shadows of people in distress. Often devoid of clear landmarks or locational details, his work demonstrates the universality of terror and its effects on people internationally. Genovés’ work has been exhibited and received awards internationally and is held in many major collections, including Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York,  Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the  Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna. Genovés died in Madrid in 2020.

"For me, the little figures fulfill the missions of realism and humanity, in that they represent how we are all the same, but also different.” -Juan Genovés
