Biography

Frederick Mershimer was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1958. He studied painting and drawing at Carnegie Mellon University and received a BFA in 1980. After moving to New York from Pittsburgh in 1983, he studied printmaking at The New School, Pratt Graphics Center and Manhattan Graphics Center. Mershimer was initially drawn to the slow, direct and laborious mezzotint process because it echoed his considered approach to drawing. He is known for his detailed, technical cityscapes that capture the fine architectural details of New York and stark contrast between dark and light. Mershimer now lives and works in Brooklyn. His prints can be found in the collections of over 30 museums and organizations, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Library of Congress, and the Brooklyn Museum.
