“It is because we know that nature will bring the harsh winter to pass, and we know that life will return, that we can wait, and we continue to live here in the northern country […] I want to follow the natural passage of time as best as possible.”
Shigeki Tomura was born in Hachinohe, Japan and now lives and works in Morioka (Iwate Prefecture). Tomura graduated from the Iwate University Department of Art. He has been making prints since 1984. He is best known for his drypoints, drawings and watercolors that are highly detailed and precisely drawn. His work focuses on scenes of nature and the passage of time. In often light, minimalistic images, Tomura’s attention to each bare branch, blade of grass, shadow and gust of wind becomes clear. Tomura has been awarded numerous prizes since 1985 and continues to exhibit works internationally including in Russia, the UK, Germany and the United States.
